Ultrasonic In-situ Casting of Al Matrix Composites in Al-Ti and Al-Ti-B Systems
Aluminum matrix composites reinforced with Al3Ti and TiB2 particles were fabricated by ultrasonic assisted in-situ casting method from Al-Ti and Al-Ti-B systems, respectively. The reaction processes and microstructure were analyzed by using differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and energy diffraction spectrum(EDS).The hardness was tested by Vickers hardness tester. The results show that high energy ultrasonic can significantly refine the particles and improve the distribution uniformity, thus improving the mechanical properties of Al3Ti/Al and TiB2/Al composites. With increasing the volume fraction of the reinforcements(5vol.%→10vol.%→15vol.%),the hardness of Al3Ti/Al and TiB2/Al composites gradually increased from 89.3HV to 101.7HV and further to 112.8HV and from 93.5HV to 118.9HV and further to 122.6HV,respectively.
