Review of Chem Fun, HIV and the MSM community in Hong Kong
According to AIDS Concem”s frontline experience, some Men who have sex with Men (MSM) in Hong Kong engage in psychotropic drug use while having sex (known in the community as”Chem Fun”or”CF”).Chem fun users seem to make up a significant number of new HIV infections..AIDS Concern used an online qualitative survey which received 400 responses and 8 in-depth interviews in 2015.In addition 7,148 questionnaires collecting quantitative data were collected during April 2014 to Mar 2017, to review the current situation of Chem-Fun among MSM in Hong Kong. The quantitative study shows a statistically significant moderate association between chance of HIV infection and methamphetamine use (OR =3.67, 95% CI: 2.01-6.68) while the qualitative interviews suggested some complex and specific interventions on drug use in the MSM community are needed.Cross-expert capacity building between the drugs field and HIV/AIDS field, case work collaboration as well as community engagement are recomended to develop a comprehensive service model in order to tackle the drug use issue and its impact on HIV infections.
