Dharma, Kautilya and Confucius,The Common Criental Wisdom from Ancient India and China as a Dialogue of Asian Civilizations
Kautilya”s Four Approaches to successfully realizing Objectives: SAMA (Conciliation), DANA (Gifts), BHEDA (dividing opinion) AND DANDA (Penalties)Wisdom and Values based on Asian characteristics and formed through long-term mutual learning between Asian civilizations. This paper will talk about shared wisdom between Asian countries, especially India and China.India and China are amongst the oldest civilizations in the world.By studying their ancient traditions, values and wisdom we could come up with a basis for multifaceted dialogues within Asia, especially between these two countries. In India, Kautilya”s Arthashashtra, an ancient Indian treatise on statecraft, economic policy and military strategy was written in the 4th century B.C.by Chanakya/Kautilya-a visionary who was well versed in the problems of society and the skills of governance at that time.Being a scholar at Takshashila and a teacher and guardian to Emperor Chandragupta Mauraya, he developed these strategies which rightfully served as a guideline to the Kings and Emperors on how to manage and run their kingdoms successfully.Several of the administrative suggestions/strategies prescribed therein are still relevant and practicable in today”s modem world. In China, Confucius (551-479BC) was and has been an icon of wisdom and certain aspects of the philosophy of Confucianism are still as relevant today as they must have been in ancient times. The Analects of Confucius are well known and provide a beacon of guidance to many aspects of statecraft, governance and community living in the social life and milieu of China today. We could draw commonalities between the teachings and philosophy of Chanakya/Kautaliya and Confucius and think about the shared wisdom of the two great sages. If we could understand them in the context of the ancient civilizations of Asia, that is India and China, we could perhaps develop another valuable and useful aspect of a framework for dialogue. This dialogue could have relevance for other Asian countries as well because of the many shared values and traditions by us in Asia. This dialogue could help in understanding and developing solutions for the economic, societal and environmental problems which are a natural concomitant of economic development in these countries today.
