Rumi and Confucius: Advancing for World Peace through Peace Within
Confucius in East Asia and Rumi in West Asia both narrate philosophical and ontological discourses oriented towards harmony and tranquillity within the individual, the state and the wider world. In their tradition the three are not detached from one another and are in fact inter-related.Their outlooks, referred to as ru xue and erfan in their respective cultures, are heavily dependent on learning and ethics.State morality converges with individual and social morality that derides the ethical dichotomy promoted by the Western/Machiavellian tradition. This paper aims to outline the above thesis and elaborate on the various dimensions of the common heritage between Confucius and Rumi.In that regard ethical, political and religious aspects will be focused on illustrating the centrality of humanity, love and virtue in both discourses. It will be demonstrated that according to both traditions without individual propriety, social, political and global peace and order will not be attainable on a long-term basis.
