Simulation of Atkinson Engine Performance at WOT with EGR and LIVC Strategy
Researches of Atkinson cycle realized by LIVC(Late Intake Valve Closing)strategy in internal combustion engines show that the extended expansion gasoline engine has a better fuel economy performance compared to traditional gasoline engines.How-ever,LIVC has an intrinsic drawback in power output performance by the decline in the effective compression ratio(CR)as well as the bad volumetric efficiency caused by the back flow of charging mass.EGR(Exhaust Gas Recirculation)was adapted to improve LIVC strategy for solving these problems.Different EGR and LIVC strategies were simulated by a test verified 1-D numerical model which was set in GT-power software, and the results show that LIVC strategy combined proper EGR rate have good potential in both maximal torque output and fuel economy improvement.Refer to the operating point of 3000 rpm at full load, the BSFC of the Atkinson engine with a moderate LIVC and low EGR rate is much lower than the prototype engine and the power output can be maintain in the same level or even better than the original engine.
