Tribological Performance of Advanced Cylinder Bore with Ceramic Coating in Diesel Engine
The piston ring packs contribute up to 25%of the total mechanical engine friction loss, and a corresponding fuel con- sumption of up to 4%. Coating technology is one of the effective ways to reduce the friction power and improve fuel economy. In present work, the advanced cylinder bore with a ceramic coating and uncoated cylinder bore were employed. Their frictional behavior and wear performance, when sliding against the piston ring with DLC coating, were investigated on a UMT tribotester. The results indicate that the friction coefficient and wear rate of cylinder bore decrease 17%~28%, respectively, with ceramic coated.
