Extraction of Quality Fuel from Mixed Plastic and Its Performance and Emission Testing in CI Engine

The present rate of economic growth is unsustainable without saving of natural energy. Thus, mankind will soon have to rely on alternate renewable energy sources. Also, suitable waste management strategy is another important aspect of sustainable develop- ment. Plastics have been one of the materials with the fastest growth because of their wide range of applications due to versatility and rela- tively low cost. The present work involves the synthesis of a petroleum-based fuel by the pyrolysis of plastics. Thermal conversion process has been applied with three types of plastic mixture namely HDPE, LDPE, and PP in the ratio of 2: 2: 1. The physical and chemical properties of plastic fuel are within the standard limits. Three different blends namely P10, P20 and P30 are prepared by mixing diesel and plastic fuel. The performance and emission analysis of the selected oil sample has been carried out on a three-cylinder CI engine. The results are compared with the performance and emissions of same engine operated on pure diesel fuel. The change in power output is less but the HC emission increases considerably.
