A Study on Beat-rattle Phenomenon of Manual Transmission
The paper provides an investigation into the beat-rattle occurring on a RWD manual transmission at high gear position and under wide open throat condition. Firstly, the sources of beat-rattle are discovered to be the engine second order excitation and transmission countershaft rotational excitation, through both experiment and simulation. Secondly, torsional damper is optimized to re- duce the excitation of beat. Thirdly, the relationship between excitation frequency difference and rattle sound quality is investigated on a gear rattle sensitivity test bench, to get the best frequency difference. Finally, a combined solution, consisting of the optimized torsional damper and tuned gear ratio, is applied on the vehicle, and testified to settle the problem of beat-rattle.
