Three Profiles within Conceptions of Learning English in a Blended Learning
Rapid evolution of information technology has changed traditional classroom pedagogies,and a number of computer-supported blended learning forms have sprouted out.In the field of second language acquisition,an increasing amount of research has been conducted on learner beliefs.Few empirical studies,however,have been focused on students” conceptions of learning English(COLE)especially in a blended learning environment.This study aims to assess students” conceptions of learning English in blended learning.Data were collected through the COLE questionnaire among 284 college students in China.Seven factors of COLE are identified,such as ”memorizing,” ”testing”,”drill and practice,” ”increasing knowledge,” ”understanding,” ”application,” and ”seeing in a new way”.More interestingly,the results also reveal a three-profile hierarchical structure of learners” COLE,in that the conceptions ”memorizing,” ”testing,” and ”drill and practice” are grouped as the lower-level profile,while the conceptions of ”increasing knowledge”,”understanding” as well as the conceptions of ”application” and ”seeing in a new way” are classified as the middlelevel and higher-level profile respectively.Implications for English teaching and further research are also discussed.
