Constraints on the Way to Intended Change

The future is unknowable,no matter how accurately it is designed. However, how an organization experiences market-oriented changes that are envisioned with a comprehensive plan and come to be an unexpected present has not been fully answered in literature. The paper tries to fill this research gap and applies quantum theory that provides a unique lens to conceptualize the present as a result that collapses from multiple future potentialities based on dynamics of system constraints. An action research project was implemented in a Chinese state-owned park.Experiencing emerging constraints on the way,the project failed to fully realize changes as planned but generated unforeseen temporary results over time, although proactive change creators in this project had conducted meticulous preparation work with open-ended attitudes.Reflecting on rich primary data of the park”s case, the paper offers two sets of propositions. It firstly proposes that a change process is shaped by aggregated effects of multi-level constraints on the way,and argues that to recognize critical constraints that are better perceived is important for strategic making. It then further explores what a critical constraint is featured and how the constraint features dynamically impact on the change process over time.
