Sustainable Economy for ASEAN Economic Community(AEC):A Case Study on Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs)in Melaka
Previous studies show that an inequality of socioeconomic exists among the different areas in Peninsular Malaysia.On a broader scope,the ASEAN Economic Community(AEC)has also indicated the different levels of development among its members.SMEs are proposed as a platform to tackle the challenge.This paper discusses and comments on the factors affecting an entrepreneur”s perceived success of Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs).Further understanding of these factors will result in appropriate strategies and actions.The strategies are aimed not only for SMEs in Malaysia but also those in other ASEAN countries.The results of this study are useful to the AEC as it aims to strengthen micro,small and medium enterprises to achieve equitable economic development.The systematic review of literature is used in this research to deeper understand the dynamics of SMEs and the opportunities that come with it.This study explores the accepted definitions of SMEs in Malaysia as approved by the National SME Development Council(NSDP).Total population of 384 SMEs for food and beverage,manufacturing-related services,electrical and electronic,paper and printing in Melaka are covered for this study.Information in structured questionnaires from respondents are obtained through telephone,face to face interview and google form approaches.However,only 192 of completed questionnaires are used for the analysis.Software IBM-SPSS version 23 is used for the data analysis.Finding shows that four major factors namely demographic characteristics,entrepreneur characteristics,human capital and management,and market and product strategy have high positive correlation with SMEs” perceived success among entrepreneurs in Melaka.In conclusion,a SMEs” perceived success model is obtained and this model can be applied by other ASEAN countries for extended research on spatial SMEs perceived success comparison.
