A Field study on Heating,Ventilation and Energy Consumption in Ancient Villages in Guangxi,south-west of China

This paper aims to study the modes of heating, ventilation and energy consumption in ancient villages.A field investigation which combined environmental measurement, questionnaires and interviews was conducted in 2016 in Guangxi,a province in the south-west of China.Several ancient villages and towns(Nanning,Guilin and Liuzhou)in this province were involved in this survey. In total,30 typical local households were investigated. The obtained results showed that indoor ventilation was mainly achieved by natural convection and fans in summer, while some traditional devices, like charcoal stoves and electric heaters, were used by occupants for heating in winter, which was related to the poor economic level in local.Nevertheless, these devices(fans, charcoal stoves, electric heaters and so on)were not so effective since some local residents were not in comfortable conditions when it was hot in summer and cold in winter. In addition, the local residents mainly used electricity, liquefied petroleum gas and a small amount of biogas as major energy source in their daily life. However, renewable energy resources, such as solar and biological energy(biogas)were not widely used although they were available and abundant in local. So,it is suggested that wider application of renewable energy should be encouraged in this region.
