Chemical properties of product from hydrothermal liquefaction of animal manure

This study explores the influence of different kind of animal manure biocrude oil properties and physico-chemical characteristics after hydrothermal liquefaction.Dairy cow manure, beef manure, broiler manure and laying hens manure, sheep manure were converted under two HTL conditions(first condition: 310℃,0.5 MPa initial pressure, and 30 min reaction time, second condition: 340 ℃,0.5 MPa initial pressure, and 30 min reaction time).Biocrude oil yields based on ash free dry biomass content ranged from 16.8%to 22.5%.Gaseous phase of laying hens manure following hydrothermal liquefaction did not contain CH4 compared with other animal manure species based on GC analysis.Although relatively higher heating values were estimated for product biocrude oils, more detailed characterization revealed significant differences in biocrude chemistry.Feedstock composition influenced the individual compounds identified as well as the biocrude functional group chemistry. These findings show the importance of HTL feedstock composition and highlight the need for better understanding of biocrude chemistries when considering bio-oil uses and upgrading requirements.
