Leadership Tasks of School Superintendents:A Comparative Study on China and the United States
Purpose: This paper exarmnes the tasks that superintendents perform in China and the United States(U.S.)and asks the question ”Is it advisable for Chinese educational leaders and policymakers to learn and implement U.S.policies concerning the superintendency?” Method: This is a conceptual paper primarily reviewing articles about school superintendents in China and the United States.Additional articles on principals”,teachers”,and educational policymakers” leadership tasks in the two respective countries were also used.Findings: For Chinese superintendents to just simply adopt the leadership roles of U.S.superintendents would not be in the best interests of the country”s educational system.Findings suggest that superintendents hold conceptions which have been greatly shaped by the learning and leadership traditions,as well as the social, economic, and cultural contexts.Implications: It would be best to enact policies of change to the school superintendency that specifically addresses the unique educational dynamics of China.
