Preparation of Activated Carbon from Peanut Shells for Elemental Mercury Removal

In this study, activated carbon was produced by peanut shells using chemical activation in terms of orthogonal experiments arranged as per L16(45) for elemental mercury removal.Five experimental factors including chemical reagents (ZnCl2,H2SO4,H3PO4), reagent concentration, impregnation ratio, activation temperature and activation time were taken into account.According to the experimental results, activation temperature plays the most important role during the performance of mercury removal. It was found that the activated carbon had the highest removal efficiency for elemental mercury (up to 99%) when it was activated with 40% ZnCl2 solution with a ratio of 1∶4 at 500℃.The activation time was optimized as 1h.
