The pelletization of bio-char: Effect of temperature and its quality upgrading study

Bio-char, obtained from pyrolysis of biomass with the by-products of bio-oil and bio-gas,can be compacted into pellets to enhance its energy quality and enable wider application. This study investigated the volume density, compressive strength and energy use of bio-char pellets derived from different pyrolysis temperature and explained the possibility of upgrading the quality of pellets in terms of densification conditions. The effects of compacting load and water addition content were performed first to find the optimal conditions for the following densification of different temperature char. Results showed that pyrolysis of woody shavings concentrated the carbon, decreased volatile, hydrogen and oxygen content, and decomposed the organic Structure. The characters of bio-char at different pyrolysis temperature were respond for the different compacting behaviors.Volume density and compressive strength were both increased initially and then de-creased with the increased pyrolytic temperature. It speculated that hydrophilic functional groups, porosity and binder were the main factorsaffecting the quality of bio-char pellets due to their relations to hydrogen bond, pores ratio and adherence force during densification processrespectively. It concluded that with the compacting load of 40 kN, water content of 30-35% and pyrolysis temperature of 550-650 ℃, the pyrolysis of woody shavings and followed by densification were suitable in this study to form bio-char pellets for application as renewable biofuels.
