Real Time Monitoring of Spot-welded Joints under Service Load Using Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) Transducers

, This paper proposes a non-destructive method to evaluate the mechanical behavior spot-welded joints under service load using Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) transducers.A numerical model was developed to understand the response of the Resistance Spot Welding (RSW)joint under service load. Results showed that an opening between the jointed metal sheets of ST14 occurred under tension load, which decreased the contact area hence reduced the strength of the stress wave received by the PZT sensor.Five single lap joint specimens were tested under tension load while being monitored by PZT sensing system and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) system in real time. The data obtained from the DIC system validated the developed numerical model.By comparing the energy index of the signal obtained from the PZT sensing system before loading and after unloading, it was concluded that the RSW joint was intact under service load.Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed non-destructive method based on the active sensing with the energy index can monitor not only the load on a RSW joint but also its health status.
