Enhanced Submerged Membrane Bioreactor for Treatment of Non-Biodegradable Organic Wastewater

Membrane bioreactor (MBR) has been widely recognized as a highly promising environmental purification technology in dealing with refractory organic wastewater. However, low microbial activity and membrane fouling are addressed as major problems hindering the development of MBR.To overcome these drawbacks, we will intend to improve MBR process in the view of developing novel combined systems (internal micro-electrolysis-/Fenton-MBR), introduction of rhamnolipids and designing pendulum type oscillation module. In our study, the enhanced MBR systems have been used in dealing with refractory contaminants including textile, landfill leachate and oily wastewater. The results clearly demonstrated that the developed MBRs can not only enhance the degradation performance, but also effectively reduce membrane fouling. Moreover, more attention has been focused on analyzing the variation of the microstructure of microorganisms, Zeta potential, extracellular polymeric (EPS), particle size distribution and hydrophilic, which is useful for revealing the mechanism of membrane fouling controlling. As a result, this research results will provide technical support and theoretical basis for developing efficient and anti-fouling MBR technology in the future.
