Implementing knowledge management in an academic library
This study explored the effects of using knowledge management(KM)on librarians” work in an academic library,with the hope that KM practices might enhance the librarians” work performance.By using an action research approach,the objective of this research was to investigate the practice and performance of KM through interviews,observations,and an analysis of the KM system.Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted,and the results showed that practicing KM in multiple dimensions may improve librarians” work performance.In the team-work dimension,it was suggested to combine with the organizational goal,externalize the implicit knowledge,continue to track the results,and evaluate the performance regularly.In the system-establishing dimension,it was suggested to establish the fully functioning and easily operated system,a process which includes drawing a knowledge map and uploading documents regularly.In the community-management dimension,it needed the enthusiastic webmaster to manage and the members to share selflessly.In the process dimension,it was suggested to integrate the knowledge acquisition,storage,sharing,and creation into the librarians” work.
