Acupoint Catgut Embeddingfor Obesity: a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials
ObjectiveFor people with simple obesity, acupuncture treatment should be performed every day or every other day.Because of personal and work demands, patient compliance with physician instructions can be difficult.Acupoint catgut embedding greatly increases patient compliance.The purpose of this systematic review is to evaluate effectiveness and safety of ACE therapy for simple obesity.MethodsElectronic searches of the databases of the Cochrane Library, PubMed, Springer Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, CNKI, Wan-Fang, CBM and VIP were performed.RCTs were included if the study met the inclusive criteria.The Cochrane riskof bias tool was used to assess themethodological quality of the trials.ResultsA total of 22 studieswere systematically reviewed.The effects of ACEfor obesity was superior to manual acupuncture for IR(OR =1.79, 95% CI =1.19-2.69, p<0.01) and equal to those of manual acupuncture for reductions in BW (p =0.12) ,BMI(p =0.03), WC (p =0.07), and F%(p=0.05).ACE was superior to electroacupuncture for WC(p =0.0005)and equal to electroacupuncture for IR (p =0.07) and reductions in BW(p =0.07), BMI (p =0.05) and F%(p =0.12).In addition, ACE was equal to drug treatment (sibutramine) for all outcomes (p>0.01), superior to lifestyle modification for IR (p< 0.00001), and superior to sham treatment for IR (p =0.0002) and reduction of WC (p =0.0001).Few adverse reactions were reported in the ACE group.ConclusionsACEappears effective for obesity;however, the low methodological quality of included studies should be given caution.Additional high quality, large sample with rigorously designed RCTs are urgently needed.
