The characteristics of childhood lead poisoning werechanged by geographical and climate conditions in atownship in a valley basin with an industrial park

Childhood lead exposure is a widespread and serious concern in China, and a blood lead level(BLL)≥ 100 μg/L in a child has been defined as an elevated child BLL.We investigated the BLLs in children under the age of 14 years in a township in a valley area with an industrial park.Blood lead was measured using the differential potentiometric stripping method. The effects of the geographical and climate conditions on BLL were considered. The average BLL of the children in the township was(83.12 ± 27.65)μg/L; a total of 21.0%of the children had BLLs exceeding 100 μg/L,which is similar to the percentage of elevated childhood BLLs in China overall, but higher than the results found in the reference city. The results showed that the contribution of the industrial park to the BLLs of the children is significant. The BLLs in the township area were changed by geographical and climate conditions and additional environmental and regulatory measures should be undertaken to decrease BLLs.
