Effects of Entrepreneurial Education on Entrepreneurial Intentions:Different Mechanisms of Formal and Non-formal Entrepreneurship Education

This research aims to investigate the different mechanisms of two types of entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intentions.Drawing on social learning theory and theory of planned behavior,we propose that entrepreneurship education first changes attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control of individuals, and then makes changes in entrepreneurial intentions.Different types of entrepreneurship education(e.g.,formal and non-formal entrepreneurship education)have a distinct effect on entrepreneurial intentions.Survey data indicate that the effect of non-formal entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intentions is fully mediated by entrepreneurial attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control, whereas that of formal entrepreneurship education on entrepreneurial intentions is only mediated by entrepreneurial attitude and subjective norms. Moreover, theoretically oriented entrepreneurship education has a stronger effect on entrepreneurial attitude and subjective norms, while practically oriented entrepreneurship education has a stronger effect on perceived behavior control. Finally, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
