Removal of oxytetracycline in aqueous solution using sonoelectro-activated persulfate process

In this study, removal of oxytetracycline(OTC)from aqueous solution using sonoelectro-activated persulfate(PS)process was comprehensively evaluated along with investigating the kinetics and proposing a possible degradation pathway.A significant synergistic effect of ultrasound and electrolysis was found in the degradation of OTC by using sonoelectro-activated persulfate process.Experiments under different operating conditions were conducted, showing that removal efficiency increased with increasing PS:OTC ratio, rising reaction temperature and lower pH.Both hydroxyl and sulfate radical were involved in the system and contributed to the oxidation of OTC suggesting the pseudo-first-order kinetics in such a process.Based on the fourteen byproducts detected during the oxidation process, degradation pathways including hydroxylation, decarbonylation, dehydration and demethylation were speculated.
