Frequent exercise, a healthy habit or a behavioural addiction?

Exercise Addiction(EA)is an uncontrolled pattern of exercise that involves craving and overwhelming over-exercise with addictive attributes. So far, little is known about this unique behavioural addiction.Several core components have been identified when diagnosing EA and the Exercise Addiction Inventory(EAI)and Exercises Dependence Scale(EDS)are used as reliable assessment tools.A number of theoretical models have been proposed to explain the development of exercise addiction.Eating disorders are the most commonly co-occurring disorder, and body image disorder, low self-esteem,narcissism and other substance use additive behaviours are also high risk factors in the development of exercise addiction. It is difficult yet important to distinguish EA from highly involved physical activity.Further investigation is necessary to discover the Pathogenesis and treatment approach of this addicted behaviour.
