Review of Personal Cooling/Heating Technologies

More and more energy-efficient HVAC technologies have been developed and adopted to reduce energy consumptions of air-conditioners and heat pumps in the United States and worldwide. However, most of them are still being implemented in such a way that HVAC systems condition large unoccupied building space.A significant amount of energy,up to 30%,can still be saved if air conditioners are tailored to cool occupants only.In this paper,we first provide an overview of stateof-the-art personal thermal management devices.Among them, there are garment-based systems and non-garmentbased systems. Those garment based devices have a very good mobility but they also add weight to wearers. The operating time garment-based systems is also limited.Non-garment-based systems are stationary but do not have the restriction on weight and operating time.Lastly,a mobile personal air-conditioning device,RoCo,was introduced to provide an improved thermal comfort level for individuals in inadequately cooled environments. This device is a battery powered air-conditioning system with the phase change material(PCM)for heat storage.
