Continuous Casting: The Process, Advantages and Applications
The process of continuous casting as a method of producing solid cast iron bar was developed sometime around World War II and provided a suitable alternative over static castings.Low volume parts could be machined quickly and more economically out of solid bar without the lead time and cost to produce patterns and individual castings.Additional advantages were quickly discovered as well.Bars had a much denser grain structure because of the ferrostatic head pressure in the casting crucible.Slag,gas and other common casting defects were virtually eliminated and the bars were much cleaner and easier to machine because they are cast against a graphite die rather than a sand mold.Landfill waste is dramatically reduced,there are no binder emissions and energy usage is far less than steel production.This paper covers the modern processes of continuous casting technology for producing gray and ductile iron barstock,the advantages over alternate casting methods,and the marketing opportunities for continued growth through conversion selling ”1”.
