Effect of Particle Concentration and Heat Treatment Temperature on Hardness and Tribological Properties of Electroless Ni-Co-P/nano-SiO2 Composite Coatings

Ni-Co-P/40nm-SiO2 composite coatings on Al alloys have been prepared successfully by electroless composite plating technique in this paper. The surface and cross-section morphologies, chemical composition, microstructure,Vickers hardness, friction and wear behavior of the composite coatings were investigated with scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS),X-ray diffraction(XRD),Vickers hardness tester, high speed reciprocating friction testing machines and 3D scanning surface profile instrument, respectively. The experimental results demonstrate that the introduction of SiO2 particles can improve hardness and wear resistance of the Ni-Co-P matrix, and the composite coating prepared from 9g/L SiO2 in plating bath gets the highest hardness and the best wear resistance. The heat treatment at 200℃,300℃,400℃ and 500℃ for 1 hour can enhance the hardness and wear resistance of Ni-Co-P/nano-SiO2 composite coatings, and the maximum hardness, the minimum friction coefficient and wear volume are all obtained at heat treatment temperature 400℃.
