The Effect of Fifth Wheel Location on Handling Stability of Articulated Vehicles
The fifth wheel location has a directly effect on the vehicle performance, including the ride comfort, handling stability and fuel consumption. This paper aims at studying the effect of fifth wheel location on handling stability by combining the theory analysis and simulation.A simplified model to calculate axle loads was established in first and verified by simulating. The analysis results have shown that the axle loads of 1st,4th,5th and 6th are increasing along with the front offset of fifth wheel while the axle loads of 2nd and 3rd are decreasing.Further, the handling stability is evaluated by considering the on center handling, stable steer, steer returnability and steer handiness. And the results denote that increasing the front offset will improve the handling stability on the whole.
