The effects of large furnished cages on performance, welfare and egg quality of laying hens

The study aimed to investigate the effects of large furnished cage on laying hens,Three hundred and sixty(360)-Hyline brown hens were divided into 3 treatments: large furnished cages(LFC),small furnished cages(SFC)and conventional cages(CC)with 6 replicates. The results showed that egg production of hens in LFC was significantly lower than that in SFC and CC groups(P<0.05).Daily feed intake, feed egg ratio,-egg weight,-broken eggs and dirty eggs were not affected by cage types in this study. However,Hough Unit and Albumen Height of the eggs from LFC and SFC were significantly higher than those from CC(P<0.01).Welfare conditions(feather conditions, gait score, and fluctuating asymmetry of tibia length or wing length)in LFC and SFC hens were much better than the hens in CC(P<0.05).In conclusion, the hens in the LFC had lower productivity, higher egg quality and better welfare conditions than those inthe SFC and CC.
