Study of photocatalytic oxidation of Hg0 by CuO/TiO2

A facile approach for the fabrication of CuO/TiO2 is demonstrated. In this study, low cost CuO/TiO2 photocatalysts (CuO loading 0-15wt.%) were prepared, characterized and evaluated for gas-phase Hg0 oxidation.CuO/TiO2 photocatalysts were used to remove gaseous elemental mercury under UV light and visible light (Xenon lamp, LED) respectively, and the optimum doping of content of CuO and optimum illumination condition were determined. The results showed that the CuO/TiO2 photocatalysts had a high efficiency Hg0 removal ability under UV light (all above 70%), visible light (57.8%, the CuO doping reached 1.25wt.%) and LED (about 60%, when the CuO doping reached 1.25wt.%).The probable mechanism by which CuO/TiO2 photocatalysts removal gaseous elemental mercury was proposed: with CuO doping, CuO not only prevented electrons and holes recombination, but also narrowed the band gap of TiO2.
