Ulcerative colitis: Our experience with 78 Cases in Longhua Hospital

Objectives: To retrospectively evaluate the diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC).Methods:78 inpatients with UC who were admitted to Longhua Hospital between January 2008 and June 2013 received Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy only were analyzed for gender, age, course of the disease, clinical type, extent and severity of the disease, symptoms ,treatment strategies, and therapeutic outcomes.Results:According to our previous experience and the characteristics of the inpatients, 89 inpatients whose symptoms were mild, courses of disease were relatively short and the lesions were mostly located in the rectum or sigmoid colon,received TCM therapy only initially.The results showed that 78 cases were effective, and the total effective rate was 87.6%.The Sutherland DAI scores in these 78 inpatients revealed reductions before and after treatment(6.01 ± 2.36 Vs 2.35± 1.11 ,p < 0.001).The symptoms such as diarrhea, mucopurulent bloody stool, abdominal pain and tenesmus were improved.Conclusion: TCM, as a complementary and alternative therapy, which is widely used in patients with mild to moderate disease and as adjunct treatment in patients with moderate to severe disease, was efficacious in the treatment of UC.
