Adsorption of cyclic organics generated during electrochemical oxidation of Orange II by activated carbon fibres and toxicity test

Though advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are effective for the removal of organic pollutants in aqueous solution, generation of toxic cyclic organics emerges as one of the significant disadvantages of AOPs.This study explored the possibility for the adsorptive removal of cyclic organics generated during electrochemical oxidation of an azo dye Orange II.It was observed that cyclic organics accumulated dramatically during electrochemical oxidation. In order to detoxify the toxicity of AOPs-treated effluent, activated carbon fibre (ACF) was tentatively used to remove these cyclic organics. The adsorptive removal capability of cyclic organics on ACF declined with the prolonged oxidation duration. The removal effieiencies for both the dye and cyclic organics decreased with an increase in the solution pH.The increased reaction temperature reduced the uptake of cyclic intermediates on ACF, indicating an exothermic adsorption process in nature. Moreover, the toxicity of the oxidation-treated ORII solution was significantly reduced by removing the cyclic intermediates via ACF adsorption.Adsorption process might be a best alternative for the post-treatment of the AOPs-treated effluent.
