Comparative Analysis of the Bird Motifs Between Abbasid Potteries in Iran and Changsha Ceramics in China (the 9th Century)

In the early Islamic centuries, birds were the most common motifs that appeared on the Iranian potteries. The goal of this article is to identify the characteristics and morphological design of such motifs created during the 9th to the 13th centuries AD and to compare them with Chinese artifacts(belonged to the 9th century AD) to recognize the influences of trading relationship between Iran and China. The main centers producing such artifacts in the above mentioned period were Gorgan, Nishapour, Kashan, Rei and Saveh. The Chinese samples have been chosen from Changsha. The visual materials required for this research were collected from books and museums. The results of morphological comparisons would show that though in many points Chinese and Iranian bird motifs were similar, they have kept their own unique traditions and styles.Chinese motifs are more realistic and natural, whereas Iranian motifs contain more geometrical patterns. The results revealed that during the 9th till the 13th centuries (contemporary with Abbasid period) in Iran, in spite of geometrical patterns inherited from pre-Islamic period, motifs are seemed to revolve gradually to natural forms.
