Evaluation of Sand for Bedding Dairy Cow Stalls
Sand is a common bedding material used as a resting surface for dairy freestalls.Using Sand as Bedding have many positive aspects including comfortable to lie on, uniform support,cool in the summer, non-abrasive, and offers confident footing during reclining and rising maneuvers.The objective of this study was to assess softness of sand for use in cow free-stall bases by the Clegg Tester.The Clegg Tester has the potential to be used to evaluate relative softness of various resting surface materials.A sand sieve analysis is used to quantify a sand sample by determining its particle size distribution.Values measured by A Clegg Impact Soil Tester with a 1-kg hammer were recorded for dry sand with different particle size.The conclusions showed that dry sand with different particle size almost has no effects on these values.
