Use of LINE in flipped CSL creative writing class
In this study,the smartphone app LINE was chosen as the mobile technology to develop a flipped Chinese as a second language(CSL)creative writing class.Making use of LINE”s expediency and immediacy,this study aims at enhancing CSL learners” learning motivation and writing performance.Chinese writing course is stereotypically regarded as the course for advanced learners,because basic language competence is required.The present study integrated creative writing,namely free writing,into CSL writing class,basic learners can generate their idea through authentic experience,without regard to spelling and grammar.By utilizing LINE,learners can write down their thought at anytime and anywhere,facilitating outside-the-classroom learning.This experiment was administered in a Chinese language class over a ten-week period.There were 12 CSL learners participating this study,and their Chinese ability is at CEFR A2 level.This paper addresses three research issues in relation to effectiveness of using LINE in CSL writing training.The first issue discusses how to utilize LINE”s group text message,audio message,and screen capture to develop a flipped CSL writing course.The second issue elucidates how to carry out peer assessment through LINE”s note,like and comment.The third issue investigates the learners” writing performance,learning interest,and continuance intention to learn via LINE.
