The Application Research of Visual Thinking Tools in Junior English Reading Class
This article reports on a study that is about the application of Visual Thinking Tools(VTTs)in Junior Middle School Students” English reading class in China.Visual Thinking Tools(VTTs)are different visual patterns,maps or graphic organizers that based on a type of thought process.Chinese students which are in Junior Middle Schools are afraid of reading English materials.And in the tests or examinations,the proportion of reading is about 55%.Therefore,students” difficulties in reading are becoming a booming problem among middle schools in China.Using VTTs such as Thinking Maps? and Mind Maps while in reading class helps students build their thinking routine and mapping their thoughts.In this study,it sought to address 3 questions including(1)What are students” perception of using VTT in learning?(2)What are teachers” perception of using VTT in teaching?(3)How are students using VTT in their learning?(4)How are teachers using VTT during reading instructions?(5)Does gender difference exist among students in the use of VTT? Participants in this study are Junior Middle School students and some English teachers from Foshan,Guangdong,China.And this study lasts for two years.Results of this study indicated that Visual Thinking Tools(VTTs)can help students improve their thinking that are more logical and divergent.By questionnaires and interviews,we find that teachers and students are willing to use VTTs in reading class and finishing reading tasks.It is more creative and innovative when evaluating from students” works of VTTs and teachers” reading classes that are based on VTTs.Both students and teachers are more confident in English reading.Visual Thinking Tools is a new reading strategy to be considered for all the students and teachers in Foshan,Guangdong,China.
