Comparative Analysis of Science and Technology Popularization Statistics between the Land and Resources Industry and the Environmental Protection Industry in China and Its Significance

  In this paper, a comparative analysis of Science and Technology Popularization (S&T Popularization) statistics between the Land and Resources (LR) industry and the Environmental Protection (EP) industry was done based on the S&T Popularization statistical work, which was organized by Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology, covering more than 20 industries such as Agricultural, Education, Land and Resources and Environmental Protection and so on in China.Authors of this paper are responsible for the statistical work of the LR industry and the EP industry.The statistical data shows that huge progress has been made in LR and EP industry since 2008.The number of the S&T Popularization personnel rose steadily, the structural integrity of the staff becoming more rational.The funds and venues and facilities for scientific activities showed an obvious increase.Various mass media were applied and the achievements of the scientific activities were remarkable.However, the comparative analysis shows that the two industries have some similar problems, such as the lack of S&T Popularization talents, limited sources of funds, weak mass media, and isolated activities.We attempt to find out solutions to the problem and limitations that affect the development of the S&T Popularization in the two industries mainly from the perspective of the S&T Popularization resources and the public demands.Our analysis showed that the LR industry has the numerical superiority in resources available while the EP industry has more social demands.Based on these findings, different solutions such as resource sharing, collaborative ex change of information and resources, interactions and mutual assistance are proposed to improve the over all level of S&T Popularization work, and ultimately to improve scientific literacy of the citizens and maintain the continuous development of natural resources.Finally, we expected to provide beneficial attempt and inspiration through our practice for other industries both in China or in foreign countries.
