Energy Use Efficiency for Future Agriculture-the effect of LED light on Plant Growth and Quality in Vegetables
The rising global populationbrings increased pressure on global food supplies and lead to the increased requirement of clean water, arable land, stable environment and enough energy. But in the foreseeable future the resource will be rapidly reduced by the unsustainable use (over-exploitation) and environmental pollution. To maintain our agriculture and improve the economic and environmental sustainability of crop production, resources must be utilised as efficiently as possible. This project aims to investigate resource use efficiency with the evaluation and improvement of vertical farming system. At the initial phase the effects of different supplemental light including Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) light on plant growth and photosynthesis in pek choi and tomato have been studied, the higher luminous efficiency and positive impact for plant growth showed the great potential of LED facilities compared with other artificial light and indicated that it is the most appropriate light resource at this stage.Further, extending the varieties of plants for LED faming system will be used for potential maximum efficiency during plant growth and development.Molecular markers or genes associated with photosynthesis and plant growth under LED lighting by using high-throughput RNA-Seq technology will be identified. The modelling on the resource use efficiency (LED light/nutrient/water use efficiency) will be analysed in future.
