Association of Overweight and Obesity with the Progression of Other Metabolic Syndrome Components: A Five-Year Longitudinal Study in Beijing
Objective: This study aim to (1) investigate the incidence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its related factors, (2) compare the first emerging MetS component between different body mass index (BMI) levels over a 5-year period, after controlling other four MetS risk factors at baseline. Methods: Based on the health examination system in a certain center for Health Management of Beijing, a cohort of 1,985 adults aged 20-64 years who were free of other four MetS components (TG, FPG, BP and HDL) at baseline from 2007 to 2012 was set up Association rule mining and link analysis were adopted to visualize the state change over time. Results: Participants age was (41.46 ± 10.57)years old.The overall prevalence of MetS during follow-up was 6.75% (95% Confidence Interval(CI): 5.65%-7.85%).Male (OR=2.627, 95%CI: 1.793 to 3.848) and 45-64 years (OR=1.688, 95%CI: 1.174 to 2.427) subjects had a higher prevalence of MetS.The OR associated with 23 <BMI ≤ 27.5 and BMI ≥ 27.5, compared with 18.5 <BMI ≤ 23, were 2.931 (95%CI: 1.827 to 4.702) and 7.211 (95%CI: 4.315 to 12.052).Analyzing risk factor flow over the follow-up, we found that the first emerging risk factor was decreased high density lipoprotein (HDL) and elevated blood pressure (BP) for normal-weight and overweight/obesity adults, respectively. Conclusions: Compared with women, men have a higher prevalence of MetS.Raised BP was the first onset components of MetS for overweight/obesity adults, and that for adults with normal body weight was decreased HDL.
