Shifting from Authority to Grassroots? The Comparison of Official Media Credibility and Unofficial Media Credibility in Natural Disasters
With the emerging of online disaster communication, the role of official media versus unofficial media has attracted a lot of attention from both academics and practitioners in China.The impact of media reliance and involvement on the differences of official and unofficial media credibility was explored by means of investigations.The audiences perceive more credibility of official media than that of unofficial media during natural disasters.The audiences” reliance on official media for information is heavier in natural disasters.Moreover, their media reliance is positively correlated with media credibility.In higher involvement, victims judge the official media as a more credible source of information about disaster-reducing.On the contrary, non-victims assign more credibility to unofficial media on the information about disasters.In lower involvement, the victims perceived high credibility of coverage about disasters on the media which they relied on, so did non-victims perceive the coverage about disaster-reducing.
