Association of Hair Cortisol with Somatic Complaints and Schizoid Behavior among Autistic Children
Autism individuals were thought to suffer from cortisol-secreting disturbances. However, relationship between cortisol levels and behavior problems has not yet been explored among autistic children.Using hair cortisol as a biomarker of one-month HPA axis activity, this study aimed to explore the relationship between HPA axis activity and behavior problem in the Child Behavior Checklist among autistic children.Hair samples were collected from 8 autistic children and 6 normal children. The results revealed that hair cortisol concentrations significantly positive correlated to the scores of somatic complaints (p <0.05) and schizoid behaviors (p < 0.01) among autistic children, but such association was not found among normal children.
