Early Experience, Brain Development, and Early Childhood Education

A great deal of discussion and debate surrounds the issue of the importance of the first years of life on fostering adaptive brain and behavioral development.Preparing young children for school and providing them with an optimum environment for learning should be critical issues for a society in which children are the future scientists, workers, and educators. In this talk I will briefly review the data on the effects of early experience on brain and behavioral development and the evidence for sensitive periods during which experience plays a critical role.A framework for thinking about society”s role in early childhood education will be presented.
