Development and Social-Cultural Learning of Cooperation: Sharing Behaviors in China”s Only Children and Children with Siblings

China”s one-child policy makes it a special field to study the prosocial behavior of the only child. There is a great concern in the society that the only child would be more self-centered for being spoiled. In a longitudinal study conducted in rural China where there are almost equal numbers of only children and children with sibling, we examined the development of 960 young children”s sharing behavior towards friends or strangers in a dictator game. The study examines the developmental origin of reciprocal altruisms.
