Photo-induced self-assemblyof proteins and related protein-drug nano-assemblies for drug delivery
Disulfide bonds buried in proteins can be ruptured by UV illumination which triggers the unfolding of these proteins that further self-assemble into different kinds of aggregates.Under UV illumination with low intensity, chicken egg white lysozyme (CEWL) can aggregate into fibrils through newly formed intermolecular disulfide bonds following a runaway domain-swapping mechanism”1”.
