Visualizing Excavations Records by Means of Information Design
1.Introduction This paper is divided into five parts. In the first part, a brief introduction on currently ongoing archaeological practices is given in which the research problem is presented. The second part uses specific material from the documentation of an archaeological collection to show the characteristics of cultural heritage data.Orienting itself on the target audience of information graphics, the third section is intended to demonstrate how and where knowledge visualizations can be used. The fourth part presents visualization methods and approaches to solving the problem at hand. The fifth part summarizes best practices by offering examples from state-of-the-art visualizations and ongoing work at an excavation site. The present paper is a contribution to a visual hermeneutics of artefacts of cultural heritage that offers new approaches to historical data by means of information design.
