Pore characteristics of activated carbon fiber prepared from windmill palm fiber(Trachycarpus fortunei)

To promote the utilization of windmill palm(WP)fibers(Trachycarpus fortunei)for value-added materials, activated carbon fibers(ACFs)were prepared using WP as precursor by water steam activation. The effect of temperature in term of porous texture were identified through Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),nitrogen adsorption-desorption and Mercury intrusion porosimetry. The results showed that ACFs prepared at relative high temperature presented more cracked and collapsed surfaces and lower yield because of violent reaction during activation. With the increase of temperature, more micropores were generated, but then were reduced due to the conversion of partial micropores into mesopores.ACFs with the highest special surface area of 1320 m2/g and total pore volume of 1.416 cm3/g were obtained at the activation temperature of 850oC.Accordingly,WP fibers were considered to be a promising precursor for ACFs production.
