Fracture Control Considerations for C02 Pipelines

Although the transportation of C02 by long distance transmission pipelines is an established technology the design and operation of C02 pipelines presents a number of challenges. One of the issues that requires special consideration is Fracture Control,i.e.,ensuring that in the unlikely event of a pipeline rupture a running ductile fracture will not occur or will be arrested with several pipe joints.Fracture Control in C02 pipelines can be a challenge due to the extended dual phase decompression response of C02.As a result running ductile fracture is a higher concern for C02 pipelines than natural gas pipelines.Factors that increase the saturation pressure will increase the arrest toughness. The presence of impurities such as hydrogen, nitrogen or methane can increase the saturation pressure and the arrest toughness. The initial pressure and temperature of the fluid can also have a significant effect on the saturation pressure.C02 pipelines that transport wet C02 gas(e.g.,production flowlines/pipelines)can present additional challenges including the need to consider the effect of the C02 environment on fatigue performance and fracture toughness as well as general corrosion attack.Fatigue Crack Growth in wet C02 environments can be more than an order of magnitude faster than in an In-Air environment. This paper reviews the Fracture Control challenges for C02 pipelines and outlines methods of addressing these issues.
