Models of Figurative Language Processing:Support from Experimental Evidence

Models of figurative language processing are involved in frequency-based models which holds that the first sense to be accessed would be the most frequent sense;literal-first model which argued that a figurative interpretation will only be sought after interpretation has been rejected;figurative-first model which that people initially seek a figurative interpretation,direct access model which suggested that a figurative sense can be accessed directly in ”realistic social contexts”;unranked parallel which holds that all senses are activated at the same time and the reader has to choose which sense is applicable for a given context;and the underpecification model which assumed that a meaning activated initially does not correspond to any particular sense but is rather compatible with all senses.The underpecification model with respect to the processing of figurative language was supported by author”s experimantal data of eye tracking.
