Application of high strength linepipe steels worldwide: Historical perspective, development, specification and application
The first use of microalloyed (HSLA) high strength linepipe steel occurred in North America in 1959.It had much better weldability than the C-Mn steel that it replaced.Over time various stimuli caused a rapid evolution of new steels with higher strength, sour service resistance, improved low temperature properties, superior fracture arrest properties and more recently greater strain capacity.Such combination of properties became possible due to improvements in steelmaking, impurity control, continuous casting, controlled rolling practices and accelerated cooling (TMCP).Simultaneously production of high quality linepipe became increasingly internationalized, and important producers have emerged in India,Middle East, Russia but more importantly in China, where technology is eclipsing the former leading companies in USA,Japan, France, Germany and Italy. The chronology of the developments is presented in detail in the paper.
