Application of In-situ Gas Generation Huff-n-puff Process in the W5 Heavy Oil Reservoir of the Jiangsu Oilfield

Miscible/immiscible carbon dioxide (CO2) injection is considered one of the most effective technologies for improving oil recovery from complicated formations, and, in particular, hard-to-recover oil reserves. One of the main factors restraining the wide application of this technology is its dependence on natural CO2 sources, which introduces complicating factors such as the transportation of CO2, breakthrough of CO2 to production wells, corrosion of well and field equipment, and safety and environmental problems.In-situ CO2 generation is based on an exothermic chemical reaction between gas-forming water solutions and low concentrations of active acids. In the lab, we developed a new in-situ gas generation formula, NS-1, which consists of urea, catalyst and HCl.We evaluated this formula through an high pressure high temperature (HPHT) reactor and corefloods. The lab results indicate that high enhanced oil recoveries were associated with high initial waterflood residual oil saturations, and additional oil was recovered using a huff-n-puff NS-1 injection as the residual oil saturation increased. The technology was applied in three heavy oil wells, W5-7,W5-17 and W5-15.The field results suggest that this technology works better than acidizing in W5 heavy oil reservoirs and constitutes a good EOR method.
